Her heritage is Mexican-American and is American through country of birth. Since she was a child she has had a strong interest in playing sporting activities. Gerina first started golfing at the age of 15. Gerina went to Goddard High School for her secondary education. She was the winner of this year's New Mexico State Golf Tournament during her time in high school. Also, she was an athlete in volleyball who played at the national level. The year 2003 was the year she began studying in The University of Texas. The school won every one of the tournaments she competed in during her final year. During her undergrad career she took home awards such as the Conference USA Individual Champion Player of the Year Award and the Female UTEP athlete of the year.
